Creating Your First Short Link
Last updated: April 6, 2024
Introduction
Creating a short link with ttny.io is quick and easy. This guide will walk you through the process of creating your first shortened URL, customizing it, and sharing it with your audience.
Basic Link Creation
Follow these simple steps to create your first short link:
Step 1: Log in to Your Account
Navigate to ttny.io/login and sign in with your credentials. If you don't have an account yet, you'll need to create one first.
Step 2: Access the Link Creation Tool
Once logged in, you'll be taken to your dashboard. Click the "Create Link" button in the top-right corner of the page.
Tip: You can also use the keyboard shortcut "N" to quickly open the link creation form from anywhere in the dashboard.
Step 3: Enter Your Long URL
In the link creation form, paste your long URL into the "Destination URL" field. This is the web address that users will be redirected to when they click your short link.
Important: Make sure your URL includes the proper protocol (http:// or https://). For security reasons, we recommend using https:// whenever possible.
Step 4: Generate Your Short Link
Click the "Shorten" button to generate your short link. ttny.io will automatically create a random short URL for your destination.
Step 5: Copy and Share Your Link
Your new short link will appear in the results section. Click the "Copy" button next to the link to copy it to your clipboard. You can now share this link on social media, in emails, or anywhere else you need.
Customizing Your Short Link
ttny.io allows you to customize your short links to make them more memorable and branded:
Custom Back-Half
To create a custom back-half for your link (the part after ttny.io/):
- In the link creation form, click "Customize"
- Enter your preferred custom text in the "Custom back-half" field
- The system will check if your custom text is available
- If available, click "Shorten" to create your custom link
Tip: Custom back-halves should be short, memorable, and relevant to your content. For example, if you're sharing a blog post about summer recipes, you might use "summer-recipes" as your custom back-half.
Link Title and Description
Adding a title and description to your link helps you organize and identify your links in the dashboard:
- In the link creation form, enter a descriptive title in the "Link Title" field
- Optionally, add more details in the "Description" field
- These details will be visible in your dashboard but not to link visitors
Advanced Options
ttny.io offers several advanced options for your short links:
Expiration Date
You can set your link to automatically expire after a certain date:
- In the link creation form, expand the "Advanced Options" section
- Toggle "Set expiration date" to on
- Select the date and time when the link should expire
- After expiration, the link will no longer redirect to the destination URL
Password Protection
For sensitive content, you can add password protection to your link (Pro and Business plans only):
- In the "Advanced Options" section, toggle "Password protect" to on
- Enter the password that users will need to access your link
- Users will be prompted to enter this password before being redirected
UTM Parameters
Add UTM parameters to track your link performance in Google Analytics:
- In the "Advanced Options" section, toggle "Add UTM parameters" to on
- Fill in the campaign source, medium, name, term, and content fields as needed
- These parameters will be automatically appended to your destination URL
Tip: UTM parameters are especially useful for marketing campaigns where you want to track which channels are driving the most traffic to your content.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues when creating your short link:
- Invalid URL error: Ensure your destination URL includes the proper protocol (http:// or https://) and is a valid web address
- Custom back-half unavailable: If your preferred custom text is already taken, try adding numbers or alternative wording
- Link not working: Test your link in an incognito/private browsing window to ensure it redirects properly
